Search engine optimisation (SEO) sounds technical, and a lot of what is sold under that name is. But for a small business in Kampala, most of the results come from a short list of basics done properly: a complete Google listing, clear pages for what you sell and where, a website that loads quickly on a phone, and real reviews from real customers.
This checklist is the order we would tackle things in for a salon, clinic, law firm, hardware shop or guest house. You can do much of it yourself.
1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly
For local searches such as “pharmacy in Ntinda” or “car hire Kampala”, Google often shows a map with a few businesses before any website. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and it is free.
- Claim or create your profile with a Google account the business controls, not an employee’s personal account.
- Choose the most accurate primary category. “Beauty salon” or “Law firm”, not a vague one.
- Fill in everything: opening hours, phone, WhatsApp, website, service area and a description that says what you do and where.
- Add real photos of your premises, team and work. Update them from time to time.
- Post updates and offers occasionally, so the profile looks active.
Our step-by-step guide to getting your Kampala business on Google Maps walks through each of these.
2. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Google compares what it finds about you across the web. If your Facebook page has an old number, your website shows a different building and your Google listing uses a shortened name, it is less sure which is right, and so are customers.
Pick one version of your business name, address and phone number, and use it on your website, Google Business Profile, social media pages and any directories you are listed in. Include a landmark in the address where it helps people find you; Kampala addresses are often easier to follow with one.
3. Write a clear title and description for every page
Each page on your website has a title and a meta description. Google often uses them as the blue link and the short text under it in search results. They are your shop sign in Google.
Good titles:
- Say what the page is about, using the words customers actually search for. “Bridal hair and makeup in Kampala” is clearer than “Welcome to our world of beauty”.
- Include the place if you serve a local area.
- Are unique to each page. Ten pages all called “Home” waste nine chances.
Good descriptions are one or two plain sentences that tell the searcher what they will find and give a reason to click, such as opening hours, a free consultation or WhatsApp booking.
If you are not sure how to edit these on your site, ask your developer. Any decent website should let you change them without touching code.
4. Give each service, and each area, its own page
A single “Services” page with a list of ten bullet points rarely ranks for any of them. One page per main service, explaining what it is, who it is for, what it costs or where to see prices, and how to book, gives Google something specific to show for each search.
If you genuinely serve several areas, such as a moving company covering Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono, a page for each area can help, as long as each one has useful, specific content: the areas covered, typical jobs there, and how to reach you. Pages that only swap the town name in identical text do not help and can look like spam.
5. Make the website fast on mobile data
Most of your visitors will arrive on a phone, often on mobile data, and many will leave if the page takes too long to appear. Speed also affects how Google judges your site.
The usual culprits are easy to check:
- Oversized images. Photos straight from a phone or camera are far larger than a web page needs. Resize and compress them, and use modern formats such as WebP.
- Too many plugins and scripts, especially on older WordPress sites.
- Cheap, overloaded hosting.
- Autoplaying videos and sliders at the top of the page.
Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool shows how your pages perform on mobile and what is slowing them down. Test your home page and your most important service page.
6. Ask for reviews, and reply to them
Reviews on your Google Business Profile help you appear in local results, and they help customers decide. The most reliable way to get them is simply to ask satisfied customers, at the right moment, with a direct link.
- Ask in person or by WhatsApp right after a good experience, with your review link.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and briefly. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint often reassures new customers more than another five-star review.
- Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google’s rules, and profiles can be suspended.
7. Connect Google Search Console and analytics
Google Search Console is free and shows which searches your site appears for, which pages Google has indexed and any problems it has found. Submit your sitemap there. Analytics, set up with a cookie consent banner, shows how visitors arrive and whether they contact you.
You do not need to check these every day. A monthly look is enough to see what is working and spot problems early.
8. Publish helpful content, steadily
Articles that answer the questions customers ask you every week, such as “how long does a relaxer last?”, “what documents do I need to register a company?” or “how much does it cost to move a two-bedroom house?”, can bring in searches for months or years. One useful article a month is better than ten thin ones in a week.
What to expect
SEO is not instant. Basic fixes, such as a complete Google profile and clear titles, can help within weeks. Ranking for competitive searches takes longer, and nobody can honestly guarantee a first-place position. Be wary of anyone who does.
FAQ
Do I need a website for local SEO, or is a Google profile enough?
A complete Google Business Profile can bring calls on its own. A website gives Google and customers much more to go on, such as service pages, prices and reviews, and lets you rank for searches beyond the map.
How long does SEO take to work?
Fixes to your Google profile and page titles can show results within weeks. Content and rankings for competitive terms usually take months of steady work.
Can I do SEO myself?
Much of this checklist, yes: your Google profile, reviews, consistent details and content. Technical work, such as speed, page structure and sitemaps, is easier with a developer.
What does SEO cost?
It depends on how much work your site needs. Website packages on our pricing page include basic SEO such as titles, descriptions and a sitemap, and ongoing SEO is quoted in writing.
